Electricians install, connect, test and maintain electrical systems for a variety of purposes, including climate control, security and communications. Although most electricians specialise in construction or maintenance, a growing number do both. Timetabled sessions will take place over two and half days per week for the academic year.
The Performing Engineering Operations course is an introductory certificate aimed at developing your basic skills and the City & Guilds is a technical certificate which will give you the underpinning knowledge required to develop a wide range of skills including installation, commissioning and maintenance.
To be a qualified tradesperson you will need to complete the NVQ Level 3 in your chosen trade. The NVQ is a work-oriented qualification which requires you to build a portfolio of evidence; therefore, you should be suitably employed in a related role.
If you are under 23 years and have relevant employment, you could follow the apprenticeship route.
Course content City & Guilds units include: • Working effectively and safely • Principles of electrotechnology • Application of health and safety and electrical principles • Installation (buildings and structures)
NVQ Level 2 units include: • Working safely in an engineering environment • Working efficiently and effectively • Using and communicating technical information • Wiring and testing electrical equipment and systems
Dickies Workwear (UK) Ltd sponsors of staff workwear for this course.
Assessment Teaching has an emphasis on ‘learning by doing'. Achievement will be through the successful completion of all units. The 2330 Level 2 includes four online tests and two practical tasks. The NVQ PEO Level 2 requires the building of an assessed portfolio.
If you are under 19 years old you will also work towards Key Skills.
