What are Apprenticeships? Apprenticeships (also known as Work Based Learning) are designed by businesses in the specific industry sectors to give young people relevant and up-to-date skills to benefit both their careers and their employers. They are practical, on-the-job training programmes enabling students to learn a skill or trade. Apprenticeships are designed for young people aged between 16 and 25, not in full-time education. Since their introduction in 1994, over 1 million young people nationwide have taken part in an apprenticeship programme.
What's in it for my Business? Around 130,000 employers currently employ apprentices. Apprenticeships develop competent, motivated employees. They demonstrate the high level of employer commitment to your employees. They improve the company's image and attractiveness for current and prospective employees. They encourage staff to remain with the company, reducing staff turnover and the cost of recruitment. How Much will it Cost? For young people aged between 16 and 18, the training is free as it is government funded. For Apprentices aged 19+, the government expects the employer to make a contribution towards costs. By 2010, the expected contribution will be 50% which will be introduced gradually over the next few years. For 2008/9 the contribution is expected to be 47.5%.
