What are Apprenticeships?

Apprenticeships are designed by businesses in the specific industry sectors to give young people relevant and up-to-date skills to benefit both their careers and their employers.

They are practical, on-the-job training programmes enabling students to learn a skill or trade.

There are several different age categories for Apprenticeships; 16-18 year olds, 19 + and 25+.  The apprentice is expected to spend around 1 day in College (the exact time is dependent on the specific Apprenticeship programme), and the remainder of the week working for their employer.

What's in it for my Business?

Around 130,000 employers currently employ apprentices. Apprenticeships develop competent, motivated employees. They demonstrate the high level of employer commitment to your employees. They improve the company's image and attractiveness for current and prospective employees. They encourage staff to remain with the company, reducing staff turnover and the cost of recruitment.

Visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk to find out more about the Apprenticeship scheme and discover how apprenticeships have benefited other businesses.

How Much will it Cost?

For young people aged between 16 and 18, the training is free as it is government funded.

For apprentices aged 19+ and 25+, the government expects the employer to make a contribution towards costs.

The National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £2.60 per hour, or £96.20 per week based on a 37 hour week, although many employers choose to pay more than this.

How do I find an Apprentice?

If you are an employer and are interested in offering an apprenticeship to a young person, please contact us on 01823 366 555 as we can help you recruit the right person.
